The improvisational, extended pieces Pink Floyd performed in the early days ultimately led (via pieces like Atom Heart Mother) to one of their recorded and live highlights - Echoes, which makes up the entirely of the second side of Meddle. Its origins laid in the band members doing lots of pieces individually, without knowing what the others had done, known as “Nothing”’s.

These were developed into pieces called Son Of Nothing, and Return Of The Son Of Nothing. From this complex method of working eventually came Echoes.

The first half of the album brings another live favourite, One Of These Days, the pastoral A Pillow Of Winds, Fearless, the jaunty, jazzy San Tropez and the quirky Seamus. After the disjointed nature of the recording of Atom Heart Mother, and Ummagumma, it saw the band properly working together in the studio again to craft an album.
