Ummagumma
Based on an idea by David Gilmour, Ummagumma was an album consisting of two sides of live renditions of concert favourites at that time, and half a side for each band member to do their own thing musically.
The name came from a Cambridge slang word for sex. The solo material in places were developments of rough pieces that the band were already starting to work on for live use, or work into bigger pieces.
The pastoral Grantchester Meadows is a good example of that, and contrasts strongly with the technically interesting Several Small Species…
